Lisa Carpenter Landis
pastel artist
About the Artist
A California native, I moved to Humboldt county in 1973. I studied art and art history at Humboldt State University. Before discovering the wonder of pastels, I worked as a successful clothing designer, batik creator, and glass artist for more than 25 years.
I grew up in a family of artists, so I have always been conscious of design. The need to express myself creatively has manifested itself in many forms all my life, but until I picked up a pastel stick, I realized that of all the things I've done, the process of painting with pastels is the most gratifying.
I am inspired by California's rugged coast and the abundant beauty of Humboldt County, including the mountains, rivers, wetlands and backroads. When I'm painting I'm lost in the landscape and completely drawn in to my attempt to express it.
All of these paintings are originals, and of places in Humboldt County. The paper is Archival grade, and the glass used for framing is "Museum glass", which is 99% UV protected.
Professional Study
Besides the years of study at Humboldt State University, I also have studied with professional artists: Kim Lordier, Glenna Hartman, Bert Collins, and Raymond Carpenter. I also spent 4 weeks in the Corbieres region of Southern France as "artist in residence" with Zaira Vietes. I've attended workshops at the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts in Connecticut, and have taken classes at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.
In 2009 I received the First Place Award for pastels at the El Cerrito Art Association.
